Sick Days = Missed School Days

For the first sem, Z has been absent in school once only. I make sure that he attends school because sayang ang tuition I know that he likes playing with his classmates. Imagine my dismay when I learned that poor toilet sanitation and hygienic practices cause students around the world to miss 443 million school days! That is equivalent to Filipino classrooms being empty for one whole month. The kids would learn so much already in that amount of time. Sadly, millions of children around the country suffer from diarrhea and parasitic worm infection due to being exposed to dirty toilets.

This is why we should teach our kids to wash their hands with soap and water after using the toilet. I’ve no problem teaching Z this lesson because he is innately OC. We also sing a “hand-washing song” I learned when I was teaching so that we rub the soap around our hands properly to kill the germs. It goes like this:

To the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star

I can wash my hands you see

Wash them clean, as clean can be.

Inside, outside my fingers too

Around my thumbs and then we’re through

Now rinse away the dirt and stains

Send those germs down the drain.

As homemakers, it is our responsibility to ensure that our children’s surroundings are spic and span. According to Dr. Luisa Efren of Philippine Public Health Association (PPHA) the simple act of proper toilet cleaning will prevent the spread of germs. To properly clean a toilet means using products which is proven to kill germs and bacteria not visible to the naked eye. Such product is Unilever Philippines’ Domex.

For three years now, Domex has been working with UNICEF and PPHA on an advocacy program to educate Filipinos about proper toilet sanitation to keep their family safe from disease-causing germs. A good grasp on hand washing and a thoroughly cleaned toilet gives our kids an advantage to fight off illnesses and avoid being absent in school!

This November 13, we will observe World Toilet Day! This movement aims to save lives, one toilet at a time. We are aiming to have 1 million clean toilets all over the Philippines! Help in spreading the awareness by sharing the video I posted and liking Domex’s Facebook Page. Let’s all do our part in keeping our kids strong and healthy 🙂
