On Homework Struggles

A year ago, I was wracking my brains on how to coax Z to do activity sheets. It was a daily struggle, since he wasn’t the type to sit down for a long period of time. I thought I had it figured out since I was a preschool teacher before.

Turns out, I just had to wait for him to be ready. Our homework struggles are far from over but now he’s slowly understanding that it is part of our routine. Last week, I tried to let him do his activity sheets in a milkshake place, and he very well complied! We finished an activity book I got for him last year!

It’s a realization that you can’t really push a child to do something when he’s not ready for it or sees no reason to do a task. Now, he writes his alphabet (in upper and lower case!), numerals, colors slightly within the lines and draws! I’m also learning to relax and just let his playful self be. After all, there are more important things to learn at this stage than writing in blue-red-blue lines.
